At first site of the Norwegian forest Cat, one is awe inspired by this magnificent, slightly wild looking breed with it’s course overcoat, known affectionately as the Wegie (Wee-jee) or in his ancestral homeland the Norsk Skogkatt. They are one of the larger cat breeds but slow maturing taking up to 5 years to reach full size and maturity.
Seeing it’s great strength and agility it is very easy to imagine it out on many successful hunting and fishing trips in the harsh winter lands of it’s native Norwegian homeland.

Norwegian Forest Cats are generally a healthy breed but as with many pedigree breeds they can be predisposed or sometimes inherit certain health conditions which is important to be aware of and watchful for. This does not necessarily mean you're Norwegian Forest will develop any of these conditions just that there may be an increased risk and worth keeping an eye out for and to be aware of.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy may be a problem with the Norwegian Forest cat as it is known to affect larger cats although at this stage it hasn't been proven to be hereditary in the Norwegian Forest breed.
Pyruvate Kinase DeficiencyPyruvate kinase deficiency is a fairly rare disease that causes a form of anemia which is often mild and it is possible that some of the signs, being intermittent, may not be noticed until the cat is older.
Glycogen Storage Disease type IVNorwegian Forest cats can have a predisposition to Glycogen Storage Disease, an inherited abnormality of glucose metabolism leading to a build of of glycogen in body tissues.
There are genetic tests available for some of the above. Research these conditions and ask the breeder if their cats/kittens have been tested where applicable. In many country’s lines, the genetic conditions have all but been bred out and seldom seen.
Summary
The Norwegian Forest cat is really a gentle giant family orientated breed. He likes his family's attention but not in any way demanding and can be quite happy amusing himself if he has the environment and means to keep him stimulated. As he is one of the larger breeds he does need some space, therefore a small confined apartment is really not a suitable home.
He is really quite an accomplished climber so don’t expect any of those high placed areas to be out of reach. If he is to be an indoor only cat then he really needs to be provided with a tall STURDY cat tree so he can exercise his preference and look down on his territory from a high vantage point.
The Wegie with his powerful physique could readily be a formidable opponent, however this very gentle well-mannered cat is hard to provoke. He is intelligent and will be playful throughout his life and also can be a little on the mischievous side.
Wegies have wonderful personalities and are a great fun breed
A Wegie is a friend for life!
